The Land Rover lineup has been a popular choice for Los Angeles drivers who want rugged performance, top-notch features, and unparalleled style. But if you’re searching for a new SUV, is the Discovery or Discovery Sport the best option for you? In this guide, we’ll lay out the key differences between the 2023 Land Rover Discovery vs. Land Rover Discovery Sport to help you decide which is your ultimate pick.
DISCOVERY OR DISCOVERY SPORT: PERFORMANCE
What driving experience do you want during your Orange County travels? While you’ll enjoy smooth and capable performance out of both models, the Discovery has more power while the Discovery Sport has higher fuel economy figures and lower price point.
- Standard Engine: The Land Rover Discovery has a higher-output engine—a standard 2.0L i4 gas engine that produces 296 hp. The Discovery Sport has a different engine option, a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 246 hp—and it’s the only engine that can be equipped on this year’s Discovery Sport. The Discovery, on the other hand, also offers a 355-hp engine as an upgrade.
- Fuel Capacity & Efficiency: The Discovery has a larger 23.5-gallon capacity fuel tank, while the Discovery Sport has a slightly lower fuel capacity of 17.7 gallons. Although we’re still waiting on final EPA fuel economy estimates for both models, it’s safe to assume that the Discovery can go longer between fill-ups. However, if history is any indication, the smaller Discovery is likely to enjoy higher final MPG ratings.
- Towing Capacity: The Discovery has the higher towing capacity of 8,200 pounds, but the Discover Sport still achieves up to 4,409 pounds. Although both models can tow smaller campers and boats, drivers with bigger dreams would be wise to choose the Discovery over its smaller sibling.
The Land Rover Discovery is more powerful than the Land Rover Discovery Sport, and it’s also better equipped for tough towing jobs. With that said, both models are confident daily drivers that can traverse any on- or off-road conditions with confidence.
DISCOVERY OR DISCOVERY SPORT: INTERIOR
You’ve seen what goes on under the hood, but what about inside the cabin? The Discovery is a little larger with more cargo space, but both models include top-of-the-line safety features and technology for the Corona roads.
- Seating: The Land Rover Discovery comes standard with three rows of seating, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport offers 5+2 seating as an optional upgrade. That means that both models can seat up to seven passengers—but the larger Discovery is a better choice if you need to be able to seat adults or older teenagers in your third row.
- Cargo Space: The Discovery offers 45 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and up to 74.3 cubic feet when both rear rows of seats are folded flat. The Discovery Sport is slightly more compact, with 26.6 cubic feet behind the second row of seats and up to 63.3 cubic feet behind the first.
- Infotainment: Both vehicles come standard with Pivi Pro™ infotainment systems, but the Discovery includes a larger touchscreen than the Discovery Sport: 11.4 vs. 10 inches, to be exact. Both models include standard Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, as well as wireless device charging.
- Safety: Both models include standard Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Braking, and a variety of other advanced safety features. However, the Discovery provides a standard 3D Surround Camera, whereas the Discovery Sport is equipped with a more conventional rearview camera.
The Discovery Sport comes with some impressive luxuries—and since new models start at just $43,300 MSRP, it could be the better choice for your budget. The new Discovery costs $56,600 MSRP as standard, but you get what you pay for! The Discovery offers a more spacious interior and more advanced standard features.
